"The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor / Mumya: Ejder İmparatoru'nun Mezarı" is the third installment of the successful "The Mummy" franchise, which earned a total of 848 million dollars worldwide, with a budget of 178 million dollars. This film, set to be released on August 1, 2008, grabs attention due to the change in the lead actress and director.
Stephen Sommers, the director of the first two "Mummy" films, stated in November 2001 that there was a great demand for a third film, but they would only make it if they found a way to make a film that was much bigger and better than the first two.
In May 2004, Stephen Sommers expressed doubts about having the necessary energy to make the third "Mummy" film.
In December 2005, a trial screenplay draft was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. This screenplay featured the story of a Chinese mummy who, in 1940, sets out to conquer the world with his cursed army.
In March 2006, actor Oded Fehr revealed that he learned about the development and writing of the script for the third film during a meeting with Stephen Sommers.
In September of the same year, Joe Johnston was offered the directorial position by Universal Pictures, and it was announced that the filming would commence in early 2007.
In January 2007, the director changed. Universal officials began negotiations with Rob Cohen to direct the third "Mummy" film, set to be released in 2008.
In the subsequent announcement, it was revealed that the new film's story would revolve around the two main characters played by Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello, along with their now-grown son. Rachel Weisz, who played a major female role in the first two "Mummy" films, had left the franchise to star in Peter Jackson's "Lovely Bones."
Another new development was the casting of Luke Ford as the son of Fraser and Bello's characters. As we remember from the second film, "The Mummy Returns," this character was portrayed as a 10-year-old boy.
